March PPE: learner response tasks

learner response for question 4-

Which was your strongest question? Why did you do better in that particular question?

my strongest question was question 2 as we were discussing about media audiences and there are different aspects to talk about as considerably the question is asking for peoples views on disabilities

Which was your weakest question? Again, try and identify why this happened. Did you misinterpret the question? Did you run out of time?

I think my weakest question was question 4 as I didn't go into a specific amount of detail and I didn't link it to the question in the way in which I was supposed to. From my view I think I misinterpreted the question but I did.I feel I did rush the question as I don't feel I got the clear understanding of the question.

In the trailer I feel the use of the build up and preparation for the paralympic games are represented as much anticipated and international sporting event which is a in demand event. In contrast the use of build up and preparation for this games could link to the shots of the athletes training as intergalactic elites. By using these images, an alternative representation is also created of the Paralympics of it being exciting and a powerful event which defies the typical stereotypes of the Paralympics being not as competitive compared to the Olympics. Positive stereotypes are reinforced as the Paralympics are instead represented in a more positive light i.e. edgy and gritty with determined athletes.

A Field In England: the appeal of arthouse film

What are some of the suggested audience pleasures for arthouse film?

The art cinema is much less involved with action than response; it is a cinema of psychological effects looking for their explanations. Arthouse movie is strongly narrative driven and persona pushed where as Hollywood film is purely entertainment. Although some arthouse movies are overseas, Bourdieu prompt that having cultural competences to read difficult texts offers the individual cultural capital.

Why do some audiences struggle with arthouse film? Refer to some media theory here (there are some important media theories discussed in the article itself).

Arthouse film is extra creative instead commercial in personality, which makes it much less appealing to mainstream audiences. As a result of some films being foreign, the usage of subtitles can also be an irritant to some viewers, might be probably the most working class audiences. David Bordwell suggested that 'the art cinema is much less concerned with motion than reaction; it is a cinema of psychological effects in search of their causes'. So the producers of artwork cinema will not be in the trade of constructing it convenient for audiences to learn the movie.

To what extent is arthouse film only for the middle classes and older audiences?

Why might this be the case?
According to Bourdieu, having such ‘cultural competences’ to read difficult texts gave the individual cultural capital and is one of the ways in which social class is emphasised. Therefore, because arthouse film is considered so highbrow and film that has a deeper contextual meaning, which people with cultural capital can understand, it appeals to middle class audiences more. In terms of the older audiences ,you would say that considering the fact that arthouse film is almost always documentaries or movies that are viewed a section of 'artwork' or visually appealing, it suits their interests greater than any individual from a more youthful generation.

What type of audience would A Field In England appeal to?

I think that it is targeted on the older generation because of the surroundings of the seventeenth century and the usage of the black and white filming. In phrases of demographics it will appeal to extra of a middle class, ABC1 audience. Nevertheless, you might argue that it would appeal to the younger audience as there's use of medications, which is stereotypically linked with the more youthful new release nowadays.

MEST1 Section B: A Field In England

A film distributor’s marketing campaign is very significant to the films success as without effective distribution, film product rarely finds an audience.

The distributor’s challenge for a film launch can thus be crudely summarised as:
1. identifying the film’s audience
2. estimating revenue potential across all platforms
3. building awareness and maintaining interest
4. persuading exhibitors to present the film
5. persuading the audience to watch it.

This campaign is complex and costly work, involving thorough research and creativity. A Field in England’s unique approach to distribution certainly generated media interest and debate. clearly A Field in England is offering a first glimpse into the future for certain kinds of film. A Field in England added value to its purchase by having a live Q&A event followed the Ritzy Picturehouse screening in Brixton, London and was shown live to the other Picturehouse venues. A Field in England made a comfortable £21,399 over its opening weekend and played to sold-out crowds at some key inner-city venues. A Field in England was also the number one trending topic on Twitter.

How was A Field In England’s release different to typical film releases?

It was different as it used a simultaneous release – in cinemas, on DVD and all the rest- instead of a staggered release.

What are the advantages to releasing the film across all platforms on the same day?
The advantages is that it creates controversy and hypes up the films release as it is different to the mainstream/typical way of releasing a film. This means that audiences will find this interesting and either watch it at the cinema or buy it on DVD or Blu-ray or even on TV.
What are the disadvantages to this approach?
The disadvantages is that the audience wont react to its controversial release as planned and resort to a cheaper way of watching the film, such as TV, therefore the film wont make as much profit/revenue as people wont go and watch it at the cinema or buy it on dvd etc.
What target audience would A Field In England be aimed at? Demographics and Psychographics.
The target audience would be mainly middle-class as it is an independent art house film which attracts an ABC1 type of audience. In terms of psychographics groups succeeder's would be attracted to this film as they are part of a higher management.

Ill Manors e-media: Tag London campaign

Summarise the Ill Manors Tag London campaign in 100 of your own words.
How does the Ill Manors Tag London campaign help to promote the film?
What synergy (links) can you find between the Tag London campaign and other texts you have studied as part of the Ill Manors case study?
Why might user-generated campaigns like this be more successful than traditional media campaigns?
Choose FIVE of the tweets above and for each one write what target audience the tweet could appeal to (demographics/psychographics) and then link the tweet to one other media text you have studied as part of the Ill Manors case study (TEDx lecture, music video etc.) Justify your link for each tweet using examples from the film/promotional material.

1.The ILL Manors Tag London campaign, is a campaign that puts together both traditional and digital media in order to promote a project. The campaign Tag London works with a company called Powster. The campaign started up a Twitter trend with the hashtag #ILLMANORS in order to help promote the film. They asked people of the public to tweet things to this account and voice their opinions on what they thought of the album. The campaign managed to reach 5,000 entries in the space of five days. The tweets were then projected onto buildings around London, and then put back onto twitter. Furthermore, to help promote the album Atlantic Records teamed up with a live stream production company Love Live to deliver a live stream event of the album launch party to YouTube. The campaign worked closely with Twitter in order to help promote the album using the hashtag #illmanors album. Using Twitter to help promote the album was an ideal platform to reach a socially and politically connected audience.

2.The marketing campaign helped promote the film because it

constantly showed the Ill Manors title this was effective in attracting the audience as they would see some of their own tweets on iconic landmarks, this would also show personal relationships. It was also a good idea as it made use of a social networking site that Ill Manor's core target audience would most likely be using.

3. There is synergy between the tag London campaign and other texts such as the soundtrack of the film and concept of the film. For example, in the tag London campaign video the same soundtrack is used to promote the film. In terms of the concept of the film, there is a link to the political aspect of the film as twitter users are encouraged to voice their views and opinions on the then current climate in the UK after events such as the London riots which is also presented in the film.

4. By having user generated content campaign like this it encourages his fans and different audience into engaging with PlanB which he then promises them that their tweets will be shown in different location within london and other people which makes the audience feel like they are a part of the community and PlanB cares about their opinion. Furthermore, by changing the subject to a political than music or the film it helps him gain more attention for his work and it also enhances the TagLondon campaign which will attract a niche audience.

5."THE RECESSION IS A WORLD SCHEME TO KEEP THE POOR, POOR. THE RICH OF THIS WORD HAVE NEVER BEING RICHER. #ILLMANORS"

This relate to the strugglers and it links to the TEDx lecture as its all based on the fact that the government are the ones that are cutting benefits and closing down government funded youth centres.

"ON PRINCIPLE, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TEENAGER LOOTING TRAINERS AND A POLITICIAN STEALING THOUSANDS IN EXPENSES? #ILLMANORS"

This tweet relates to aspirers because they are the young adults that want to get the high end jobs and will be the ones to make the change in the future. It links to Plan B's interview on the Jonathon ross show when he stands against the government stating that they are corrupt.

"LONDON IS CALLING, THE CITY IS CRUMBLING #ILLMANORS"
.
This tweet relates to the Jonathan ross show as he talks about how London as a city is very corrupt and needs change he also says how the government are not doing anything to help the less fortunate.

"@ILLMANORS #ILLMANORS OLYMPICS GONNA LEAVE US WITH A LARGE BILL A LARGE VENUE THAT WILL CLOSE BY THE NXT PROJECT AND IS A TERRORISTS WISH,"

This tweet refers to the psychographic group of strugglers this is because the the Olympic stadium was built next to an estate to try and make South London glamorous instead of paying attention to middle - lower class people who are living in estates.

Ill Manors e-media: website analysis

What examples can you find of the Ill Manors brand on the Ill Manors website homepage screen grab above?

The ill manors logo is seen on the left corner of the website, which is an iconic image as it is seen across many of the different types of media platforms such as the trailer, the album, film posters etc.

How does the website encourage the audience to buy or interact with Ill Manors products?
Things like graffiti would allow viewers to associate their lives with those in the picture because they may use the cans to spray paint walls and damage society and this links to stereotypes in society as it links to a clear image which is viewed clearly by members of society.

Look at Plan B's official website. How does it use social media in terms of content and design?

The website features all its social media links on the top right of the page in addition generally the whole page focuses on links to Plan B himself, his music and most of the links are from Plan B's you tube page which are embedded and ready to watch.

Scroll back through the wall to look at posts from around the release date of Ill Manors. How does this statement on Ill Manors link to other texts we have studied as part of this case study? Do you agree with his claim that he "won't justify" the riots?

In this article we see Plan B's true ideological beliefs being represented and it does not do what we expected. Plan B mainly depicts his views on the riots in a more complex way as he is almost acknowledging the reasons in which why people were rioting and their rage and anger for the government and the lack of opportunities they have.

Why do you think social media is overtaking official websites in terms of film promotion?
I believe that social media is overtaking official websites because nowadays anyone can make a compelling argument over social media whether that is on YouTube or twitter people can express their opinions however outrageous they same, in comparison to a official website where comments are viewed and can be deleted.
